Virtues and deeds of the month of Hijri Muharram

Alhamdulillah! Today is the first date of the Hijri New Year. That is the 01 date of the holy month of Muharram. The month of Muharram is one of the most beloved months in the 12 months of Hijri. For example, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

Narrated by Abu Bakrah:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: From the day when Allaah created the heavens and the earth, time is still revolving in the same way. One year in twelve months. Of these, four months are honored. Zul-Qa’dah, Zul-Hijjah and Muharram. The three months are intertwined. Another month is Rajab-i-Muzara, which lies between the months of Jumada and Sha’ban.

(Sahih Bukhari: – 3196)

আরো Another most sacred and blessed day in this month is ‘Ashura’ i.e. 10th Muharram. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to fast on this day. He says

Virtues and deeds of the month of Hijri Muharram

Narrated by Abu Hurairah: –

He said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: – The best fast after the month of Ramadaan is the fast of Muharram, the month of Allaah. After the obligatory prayer, the best prayer is the night prayer (tahajjud).

(Ibn Majah – (1842)

(Jame At-Tirmizi: – 438)

Narrated by Aisha (R): –

He said that the Quraish and the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to fast on the day of Ashura in the age of ignorance. When he migrated to Madinah, he used to observe the fast of Ashura himself and instruct others to do the same. When fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory, then whoever wished (Ashura) fasted and whoever did not wish.

(Sahih Bukhari: – 3631)

দিন On the day of Ashura, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) actually said to keep two fasts, one is 09th, the other is 10th or if not 09th, then 11th. Because the Jews used to observe only one fast. He instructed the Jews to observe two fasts so that they would not be alike.

★ May Allah Almighty grant us all the grace and importance of the holy month of Muharram.
